Carole Morris

I have lived in Wickford with my husband since 1975, when we bought our first house together. I have two married sons and a grandson. My job is as a book-keeper in a Basildon firm and I am also a governor at Bromfords School in Wickford.

I was first elected as a councillor for Wickford North in 2000. Shortly after I was first elected to Basildon Council, the Conservatives took control of the Council. One of our first tasks was to reduce the proposed 22 per cent increase in the council tax. We eventually reduced it to zero. We also re-opened the Towngate Theatre, which is now a great success. We built the Sporting Village to replace the previous run down facilities.

In Wickford improvements have included a new pavilion and toilets in the Memorial Park. Wickford Town Centre has been spruced up by painting the shop fronts, providing new CCTV, new benches, bins and toilets, When the market was moved into the High Street, this made room for a new Health Facility to be built. The existing swimming pool has been regenerated, and an upper story added to provide a gym.

Several years ago Nevendon Park was provided with a Skate Park, which has been so well used that we are now having to renew the equipment. Our next project in Wickford is to replace the Community Centre with a brand new Centre.

I hope that, like me, the residents can’t wait to find out what else can be done for Wickford.
