CONSERVATIVE GROUP CALL FOR CIVIC RECOGNITION OF LOCAL HEROES

Ever heard someone say 'They deserve a medal'? In what is a trying and, for some, harrowing period of the Borough's history, the Conservative Group at Basildon Council have written to the Chief Executive asking for a 'Civic Recognition Scheme' - essentially Basildon's own answer to the Honours List - to be considered once the current crisis has passed.

Cllr Andrew Baggott, Leader of the Conservative Group, said:

"When we come through the other side of this, there will be many, many people who will have supported the community –some will be organisations, who have worked tirelessly for all of us on a massive scale, whilst others will be individuals, who have helped a vulnerable neighbour in their own way. Years from now, when all this is over, Basildon Conservatives feel that there should be something that our brave frontline workers and community volunteers can cherish and keep as a memory of their outstanding work and as a token of esteem and gratitude from Basildon Council on behalf the whole community. This could be a badge, a certificate, a medal. We are open to ideas from the community and would invite them to share their thoughts on how, and who, the Council should be recognising for the fantastic work being done, day by day, by dedicated people who we all rely upon but too frequently fail to recognise.”

“We want to ensure that people’s efforts are not forgotten and that everyone in the community will have an opportunity to say thank you to all those who are currently going above and beyond to look after us and keep us safe.”
